鈥淚t鈥檚 in times of crisis, times when the world is uncertain, that there鈥檚 also the biggest opportunities for personal growth and for the society as a whole to grow鈥攁nd opportunities for young, energetic, optimistic people who have a bias towards action to make a difference,鈥 Khan Academy founder Salman Khan told 线上赌场鈥檚 Class of 2020 in a video address streamed today as part of 线上赌场鈥檚 virtual degree conferral ceremony, .

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the celebration, which streamed to an audience of graduates and their friends and families, was unlike any other commencement ceremony in 线上赌场鈥檚 history鈥攏o academic regalia, no honorary degree recipients, and no need for sunscreen or umbrellas.

But the business of the day was the same: to confer bachelor鈥檚, master鈥檚, and doctoral degrees on students completing undergraduate programs and graduate programs at the , , , and the 鈥攖his year, 1,914 degrees in total.

And although the graduates could not march across a Green crowded with well-wishers, the broadcast began with  of 线上赌场 images and people, interspersed with clips from commencement speakers from years past, including Fred Rogers 鈥50, Shonda Rhimes 鈥91, Jake Tapper 鈥91, Mindy Kaling 鈥01, and Yo-Yo Ma. The main event featured ;  scrolling to a soundtrack of the Alma Mater, recorded by 线上赌场 bagpiper , who has led every commencement procession since his own in 1996; and  from Provost Joseph Helble, who said that until 线上赌场 is able to welcome the graduates back to campus, 鈥渒now that we all, all of us in the 线上赌场 community, will always be with you and will always be a part of you.鈥

Co-presidents of  Elsa Armstrong 鈥20, a member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe, and Onaleece Colegrove 鈥20, a member of the Hoopa Valley Tribe, offered welcoming remarks, saying that 鈥渙n the homelands of the Abenaki people, we are lucky to have had the privilege to have learned from one another.鈥

Rabbi Daveen Litwin, dean and chaplain of the William Jewett Tucker Center for Spiritual and Ethical Life, offered a formal invocation. The  and glee club sang, accompanied by the wind ensemble.

In his address, Khan鈥攚hose nonprofit education organization provides free online courses to more than 20 million learners worldwide鈥攍ikened today鈥檚 crises to the challenges faced by the Class of 2020鈥檚 great-grandparents, who lived through the Great Depression and World War II and became known as the 鈥淕reatest Generation.鈥

鈥淭hey came home and were the foundation of the prosperity and innovation鈥攁nd actually a lot of the social progress鈥攖hat we saw in the second half of the 20th century,鈥 Khan said. 鈥淎nd I don鈥檛 think it鈥檚 a coincidence that they came of age during times of adversity, and you are coming of age during a time of adversity.鈥

If today鈥檚 graduates put their energy toward positive change, Khan said, 鈥淵ou have a chance of being another Greatest Generation.鈥

Khan shared his method for figuring out what really matters in life: He asked the graduates to imagine themselves 50 years in the future, reflecting back on their accomplishments and regrets. What would happen, he asked, if in that future a genie offered their 70-year-old selves 鈥渁 second chance鈥 to go back in time to this moment, in 2020?

鈥淵ou鈥檙e sitting there watching this guy with a bad haircut give you this somewhat strange speech,鈥 Khan said. 鈥淎nd you realize, 鈥榃ait, the genie did what they said they were going to do鈥擨 am now 50 years younger, it鈥檚 2020, I鈥檓 graduating from 线上赌场, and all of those regrets, I can redo.鈥 鈥

He continued: 鈥淟et me just say how excited I am to see what you鈥攚hat I believe is going to be the next Greatest Generation, the 线上赌场 Class of 2020鈥攚hat you鈥檙e going to do with your second chance.鈥

President Philip J. Hanlon 鈥77, who recorded  from outside the president鈥檚 house on Webster Avenue, told graduates, 鈥淵ou may be physically distanced from one another today, but no distance can diminish the bonds you鈥檝e forged at 线上赌场 over these last four years.鈥

Hanlon said that this past spring has seen 鈥渢he gravest of threats to our American ideals that we have ever experienced鈥濃攆rom the global pandemic and the ensuing economic recession to 鈥渢he senseless murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery鈥攎anifestations of the bigotry, hate, and systemic racism that continue to plague our nation and are yet again tearing our nation apart.鈥

鈥淏ut this is not a moment of despair,鈥 Hanlon said. 鈥淚nstead, it is a moment to ask yourselves, 鈥榃hat can I do to restore unity to our nation? How can I help the most vulnerable among us and put an end to discrimination and inequality, once and for all? What knowledge can I apply to improving the human condition?鈥 鈥

鈥淭his is your call of duty. This is your call to lead.鈥

, biology major Emma Esterman 鈥20鈥 this year who earned cumulative grade point averages of 4.0鈥攃alled for her fellow graduates to 鈥渦se our creativity, intelligence, and empathy to create a new normal that is more equitable to each other and to our planet.鈥

Citing the impact of a 线上赌场 faculty mentor on her own life, she spoke about the power of becoming a mentor. 鈥淭he best way to lift each other up is to meet people exactly where they are without judgment and to offer them your time, your actions, your respect, and your willingness to listen.鈥

At a  earlier in the day, Harvard epidemiologist Michael Mina 鈥06 spoke on 鈥淭he Benefits of Existing in a Time of Great Uncertainty,鈥 calling the 鈥済reat uncertainty and instability鈥 facing the world today 鈥渁n opportunity to seize change鈥攚hether that鈥檚 change across the globe as we鈥檙e seeing with the protests on the streets surrounding George Floyd, or change within your own life.鈥

He continued: 鈥淭he silver lining of this pandemic and of George Floyd鈥檚 senseless death, is that these events have exposed the dire need for change. Who better to make that change than all of you?鈥

On Saturday, the , , and  held investiture ceremonies.  celebrated class day on June 6, with keynote speaker Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa, chair of neurologic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Florida.
